Ready to Roll

For the first time I am ready to confess today that I secretly stalk men’s fashion blogs! Not only that, I also have a few favorites too (though let’s keep that part for another post).
Now, if you are wondering why do I stalk men’s blogs – then there is a simple answer to that – Why Not?? Men’s blogs are a healthy source of inspiration, and at the same time, it doesn't hurt to stalk a few handsome men in the virtual world! (Does it..??) There it is… I said it.. I do it (too).
So, obviously since I follow men’s fashion so religiously, there is bound to be an effect!
Menswear inspired fashion is definitely not new, however there is still a L-O-T of scope in this course. I feel I should experiment more! (I am on it..!!)
Personally, my favorite menswear accessory is a Hat! How stylish and elegant they make a man look! A hat turns a 'well-dressed man' in to a 'well-dressed gentleman'. Ha!
To me, hats complete an outfit – and Fedora hats are my favorite of all. So, here goes a very basic version of menswear inspired outfit.. my way..

P.S. For some reason the pictures don't do justice to the color of these Corduroy Pants. They are dark military green in color - though they look black in these pictures!

Cheers!

Karva Chauth 2013

These days I am least bothered about blogging and keeping the blog updated! Ask me why - cause the time in India is just flying at a jet speed. (In case you are wondering, I reached here safely last week). It's already one week since our arrival here and I am simply loving every bit of it.

So it was Karva Chauth here yesterday (click here, to know more about it) and no wonder I enjoyed it to the maximum! I wore a saree (after so long).. and got all dressed up, what an evening it was..
Enjoy the pics.. Keeping it short.. since today I am not much in a talking (to myself) mood!

Till next time!

In my Beauty List - October 2013

It's been a long time since I shared my favorite beauty products on the blog. Though last time I promised I would be posting my favorites once a month, however, I failed to do so.. I blame my laziness for that..
Anyway.. let's look at my current favorites..

The Body Shop Banana Shampoo and Banana Conditioner - Another great shampoo and conditioner duo. Guess what? My favorite fruit is banana (after mangoes)! And this shampoo feels nothing but as if I am applying mashed bananas on my head. That's a finger-licking smell for me in the shower, which is awkard, I know. I resist hard not to eat it. It would be more awkard if I do that, I know. Ok, try it to belive it!
On other note, it leaves my hair with beautiful natural curls. It cleans the hair, adds volume at the roots and my hair feel like dancing all day!
Will I buy it again - I must be joking if I say no!

The Body Shop Vitamin C Moisturizer SPF 30 - A nice tangy smell of it makes it even more special! A nice sunscreen for all skin types. Quickly gets absorbed in to the skin. It does not make my skin look greasy at all.
Will I buy it again - I keep changing sunscreens, so I would like to try something else.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Daily Scrub - Winters are not a good friend of our skin. Specially, for me cause I have combination skin and hence I like to scrub my face every alternate day. A facial every month also does the job, but when I came across this product on the shelf of the drug store, I knew I had to give it a try.
The first time I washed my face with it, I experienced such supple smooth facial skin that I wanted to keep on touching my own cheeks. It has very tiny scrub particles in it, which not only cleans the skin but removes the dead cells leaving skin feeling soft, supple and shiny after every wash. It feels very refreshing after that! Try it and you will know what I am talking about.
Will I buy it again - Of course, why not!

The Body Shop - Coconut Shower Cream - In case you are wondering, Body Shop did not pay me. I am a huge fan of their products. And this one is again true to it's promise. It has a very rich coconut fragrance. And if you are not a coconut fan, this product many not be for you. It leaves the skin soft after every bath. Love it.
P.S. I feel like eating it in the shower! (but haven't yet!!)
Will I buy it again - Hell, yeah!

Rimmel London Soft Kohl Kajal Eye Liner Pencil - It glides on very smoothly and stays put for up to 5 hours. Back in India, there are too many brands selling kajal pencils or kajal sticks. But here in States, I don't get to find 'Kajal' pencils. After I ran out of my Lakme Kajal Pencil (which lasted me for more than 4 years, by the way), I have been searching for one good Kajal stick here, but could not find anything good. I was more than happy to find this one the other day when I stopped by at a drugstore to pick up few Q-tips. It was worth the wait.
Will I buy it again - I don't mind trying other products as well.

What are your favorite products at the moment? Share with me..

Disclaimer: All the views are my own. I have not been paid or compensated in any way by any brand.

Cheers!

Mellow Yellow

I am (very) happy to see such a positive response on my previous post. More than that, I am glad that there are other bloggers/women out there who agree with me! Great minds think alike.. {wink! wink!}

So coming back to our today’s post – since my last post was quite heavy (for some), I am keeping this one light! You are welcome..

In current news, we are flying to India TODAY! {happy dance}.. In a few hours I’ll be thousands of miles away.. far, far away from Phoenix.. However, the bad part is the hideously long journey, which feels like it's never gonna end.. blah..! And the best part is our parents would be waiting for us at the airport with their arms stretched out - wide open to absorb us in a bear tight hug! Oh, I can't wait for that moment...
For now, this is a six-week trip. Let’s see what future holds in for us next!

Anyways, I have been quite busy packing for the past two days (on that note, sometimes I think, 20 percent of my life has been spent alone in packing for trips…!!). And since this is such a long trip, obviously I had to turn my closet upside down to see what all I can squeeze in! And while doing that, I found so many hidden treasures waiting for their debut.. and this bright yellow dress happened to be one of them! It was a thrift find and the moment I came home with it (like a lottery winner), I hanged it in my closet to wear it on a special occasion. And like always, that special occasion never came and doesn't seem to be coming anytime soon! Finally this weekend, I decided to wear this dress and go shopping all by myself (you know, the last minute shopping before a long travel..). And what a lovely day it was.. I also got quite a few compliments (yes, again) by strangers!

Leaving you with this quote -

Enjoy the pictures! See you in India..!!

Cheers!

Till then.. stay happy, stay healthy!

Fast Fashion: Is it Worth?

There is something that I need to share with you all. Since this is my personal blog where I share all my personal experiences, I decided to share this one as well. And even in future, I promise to be honest about the stuff I plan to put here. So last week on Wednesday I was browsing a few websites online. I love window shopping at Asos and Zara when I don’t have anything else to do. And suddenly I remembered that a Zara store was about to be launched in my city in the month of September.
I got fully excited thinking how come I forgot about it since I have been waiting for this store to open here in Phoenix for months now.. The store construction began back in May and I have been keeping an eye on the launch date, but then somehow I missed it. Anyways, better late than never! So I decided to go to the store and check out their fall collection.

Now before we go any further in this present day story, let me give you a background scenario here. If you are a regular at my blog, you would know that I moved to Phoenix no more than 14 months ago. I was living a happy life in New Delhi when this big move happened. And if I remember clearly, a Zara store launched in New Delhi a few months before we moved. Well, back then, I was new to blogging and had heard a lot of good reviews about Zara.
If you must know, in Indian market, brands like Zara, Mango and Forever 21 are considered to be high-street and expensive. We, the current day generation grew up buying local Indian brands, shopping from flea markets etc. And now with the introduction of international brands like Zara and Mango, we are also getting to taste international fashion. Since these brands have already marked their presence all over the world, we take them as it is, without giving much of a personal thought about is that hype really worth it? So now you know, that an average Indian fashion blogger would consider it a treat to shop at Zara considering the expensive stuff they sell, and the way we Indians like to show-off our expensive purchase items!
Undoubtedly high-street brands like Forever 21, Benetton etc. are doing a pretty good business everywhere, and the story is not different in India too.

On that note, not quite a long ago, Leandra Medine from the famous Man Repeller, wrote quite a good article on her blog about Zara, how they copy designs from the designers collection and sell them at retail prices. When I read that post then, I thought how can she write such a thing for such a big brand specially when the whole world is going ga-ga over the stuff they make! May be I was wrong then.. We shall come to that..

Anyways, so what I am saying here is I had a lot of hopes and expectations from Zara. So I finally gave in to the urge and went to the mall to check out the store on a first-hand basis. I really loved the interiors and the merchandise collection in the store. But when I tried a few pieces, I was really, really.. really disappointed. Now, I am not saying that everything on the racks was useless, I am just saying that I could not find the balance between the quality/fit of the clothes and the high price they were tagged for! I tried three different skirts from their latest collection and none of them fit! Since they sell products in alphabetical sizes (S,M,L etc..), they should consider putting some sort of stretch in the fabric of skirts, pants etc. I am usually a size M in U.S. but even their Large size skirts did not fit me – it was either too lose or tight! The fit was not at all flattering. And that happened with most of the clothing I tried that day.. Nothing worked for me. Of course the models make everything look so good in the catalog, but in real life it's not always the same!

Well, all my eagerness and excitement faded at that very moment.. I was so disappointed. Anyways, there were few good pieces too, like their leather jackets etc. but since they were priced so high, I did not make an effort to try them on..

So I guess, Leandra was actually right. Only imitating designer pieces is not enough. Quality and fit is important too, at least for me.. And what’s wrong in asking, if I am ready to pay for it! Fast fashion means nothing if the brands are compromising on the quality of their stuff. We love what's new, we get obsessed with it and then we abuse it for a few months and then we are ready to throw it off, just when a new collection is launched? Is that all fashion is about? What happened to the timeless and evergreen fashion pieces? What happened to re-using stuff.. over and over again?
Not only this, fast fashion has also resulted in over expenditure. We tend to spend more than we need on clothes, shoes etc.. We have to have that particular skort, or that pink coat or those loafers everyone is wearing! And as soon as something new comes in the market, the center of attention jumps from one to another so fast that we hardly get enough time to shelve off that skort or that pink coat in some hidden corner of our closet! Now the question is - Should 'WE' be leading the trends or the 'TRENDS' be leading us? Thoughts?

Making the Effort

Making the effort every day has been on my mind lately. It's fall, the typical time for dressing up. Fashion Month opens the floodgates to trendy people. And while, life may have other things in store for you: unusually warm October, working at home, not working at all... etc, making an effort still matters. Yesterday I was just talking about how making an effort doesn't have to be too much work. It's just a matter of planning things a little. That's what the links this week tell me, they peek into trends for next year, they organize the trends this year, and give a little inspiration for the upcoming holiday we all love: Halloween!

Lake Girl

Those who say traveling keeps them alive, may not be entirely wrong. Since yours truly is also a traveling freak and loves to travel whenever there is a chance! Sitting at home on weekends is just not my thing. I feel like I am wasting time by lounging on that useless couch or sleeping till late!
I would not mind getting up daily and going out visiting a new place, a new city, a new world every day! But that would be possible only in a fairy-tale life.. In real life, we have to work, we have to earn, we have to sleep, eat and perform so many other mundane duties on a daily basis! But that’s just life!

I am sure each one of us dream of doing something they love, something they are quite passionate about – and it can be anything! But how often are we able to do it? Or shall I say how often do we make a serious effort to suffice our desires or hobbies? And trust me, if you are waiting for the right time, or the right day to start – it ain't gonna happen! Since there is nothing like the right time! NOW – is the right time.. Do it NOW.

So get up and do something.. Something which makes you happy! No matter what it is.. Take one step towards it and the rest will follow..
By now, you would have got the idea that ‘Travel’ is my passion – and I don’t like to wait for the perfect time or day..

So last weekend, I was feeling a little low and husband knew only travel could lift up my mood. So we, along with our friends drove to Prescott – a beautiful small town in Arizona. We spent the day eating, walking and sight-seeing.. and the evening flew by this beautiful lake (they call it - Watson Lake). The temperature was quite Fall-like, the day was nothing less than perfect! Enjoy the pictures..

P.S. Strangers kept complimenting me for my Sweatshirt! No wonder I love it too! It's so warm and cozy..
P.P.S. Did you notice my hair is long enough now.. I can now make a tiny-weeny pony too! LOL..

Cheers!

Plaid - The Power Player

The first thought which comes to my mind when I look at the Plaid print is 'royal'. I don't know why, but I really find this print very polished.. and timeless.. and royal. So I did a little bit of research on it. And guess what, I was right!

Plaid came into limelight back in the 17th century as a signature in Scottish society. It was actually a symbol for rebellion against England due to which it was banned for like four decades! (37 years to be precise) And wearing plaid after the Scottish rebellion in 1746 was forbidden!
Well, only after the ban was lifted, the print started to get more attention and become more popular.
So here we are.. with one of an evergreen print.. which undoubtedly has come a very long way! And looks like it's certainly going to stay for no less then equally long period.

The market gets flooded with plaid print specially during the autumn/winter season. And if you want to know the reason - it's because plaid was initially manufactured as Tartan, which was a woolen cloth variety. And people wore it during the colder months - so the notion still exists!
If you ask me, I love long coats with plaid print. They are so timeless, so classic! And plaid shirts similarly like denim have become a universal item of clothing - and why not, it is so versatile, it can be worn with typically everything in your closet! So just go on, and try it..

Hmphh.. So that's all about plaid I know of!

Cheers!

How to Avoid and Lose Post-Marriage Weight Gain

I have been wanting to write this post for quite some time now. All the views are my own and here I am penning down all the thoughts and ideas based on my personal experiences.
So, I got married two and a half years ago. And it’s no big news to the world how big and magnificient Indian weddings are! From food to lights, clothes to crackers, everything shines, dazzles and is over the top!
We Indians believe in showing off all that we have! We have to show off to the whole world that our son and our daughter is getting married! The celebration may go on for weeks or even months..

Anyhow, so coming back to my story, I was exercising quite well before marriage and was at a moderate weight and height proportion. But then marriage happened, a big lavish wedding followed by week-long honeymoon and many, many weeks of lunches and dinners with the extended family and friends. It was a big change for me, in so many ways. Emotionally, I was on the ninth cloud with all the special attention, all the love and all the affection of my new family. It was all new to me, I was trying to absorb as much as I can! I wanted to seize every happy moment life was throwing at me..and well.. all my happiness started to show – not only in my eyes but on my body too. I started gaining weight, and fast! It’s another thing that I have a tendency to gain weight as soon as I start neglecting my healthy habits. And right then, I was just enjoying every bit of the newness life was showering me with! My lifestyle was changing, my body was changing, my habits were changing, I was not cooking for myself, I was not a regular at the gym anymore, and obviously all of this was not helping. Now when I think, all I did in the initial months of getting married, was eat, eat and eat since food is a medium of showing love in India. My husband is a foodie and so are my in-laws, which acted like a cherry on the cake!

In India, people show their love by cooking and serving delicious food, our very special Indian delicacies and it does not end here, they even make you eat more than your appetite (of course out of love). Politely and lovingly they will keep serving you that last (extra) helping just when you announce that you are full! And since you are new to the family, you can’t just say no and hurt their feelings! And since I was new in the family, I was shy and nervous to even think of saying no, or hurt anyone's feelings! As a result, I gained quite a lot of weight. I started disliking the face and body I was seeing in the mirror. I was just not feeling myself. And then I decided I was done with all of it. I decided to step up, for myself.
I then joined my office gym. I drafted a plan for myself – like how much to eat, when to eat, what to eat. And I started working on myself, my diet, increased my physical activities, walked more, worked out fiercely and what not! I did this with full dedication.

Of course results started to show! I also learned to say ‘No’. We all must learn that. And there is no harm in saying no – in a polite and firm manner, after all, its your body and not a dustbin!
Well, in a matter of 4 -5 months, I was back to my normal self. My confidence was back and I was enjoying my married life like never before! Nonetheless, I even motivated my husband and in-laws to follow the healthy way of living life!
So after all this brain storming, I have come up with the below few solutions which may help you to lose weight or even avoid gaining it.
  • Learn to say NO – Stop feeding your mouth when you clearly know you are full! Say no to others generously, when they offer you that extra helping which you clearly don’t need. Say no to yourself when you know you are done!
  • Cook for yourself – I know this might be tough for working women, but you should still try to make an effort. Nobody understands the needs of your body more than you.
  • Eat home cooked food – as much as possible. No explanation needed.
  • Workout – Last but not the least, work the hell out! Even if you are not over weight, or fat, you still need to work out, to keep your heart strong! Do anything that amuses you – be it dancing, running, cycling or yoga!

So that’s my story and a few suggestions! I also tried putting up my before and after pictures! It feels like I have come a long way.. Though this is a never ending journey :)

Cheers to healthy living!
Ritika..
